Global flooding is one of the real consequences of climate change which is increasingly worrying. Data shows that the frequency and intensity of floods throughout the world continues to increase, especially in areas located on riverbanks and coasts. Research by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reveals that higher global temperatures cause increased evaporation, which in turn triggers heavier rainfall. This has the potential to cause a flood disaster with far-reaching impacts. One factor that exacerbates this phenomenon is the melting of ice at the Poles. Rising temperatures are causing the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica to melt, which is creating more water flowing into the ocean. As a result, sea levels have risen which has contributed to tidal floods in coastal areas. Many large cities such as Jakarta, Miami and Bangkok are now at high risk due to a combination of rising sea levels and extreme rainfall. In tropical countries, such as Indonesia, changes in rainfall patterns due to El Niño and La Niña also play an important role. When a hydrometeorological disaster occurs, the impact is very detrimental to society. Damaged infrastructure, loss of livelihoods and a health crisis are some of the consequences that must be faced. For example, the floods that hit Jakarta successively in recent years have left thousands of people homeless and facing health problems due to contaminated water. The agricultural sector is also not immune from the impact of global flooding. Excessive water will damage agricultural land, reduce crop yields, and increase food insecurity. Therefore, farmers must adapt to farming methods that are more resistant to flooding, such as using water-resistant crop varieties and better land management techniques. The environment also faces serious threats due to flooding. Many natural habitats, such as mangrove forests and wetlands, are damaged by frequent flooding. Biodiversity loss and decline in ecosystem quality are becoming more pronounced, which could slow nature’s recovery. In addition, pollution from flooding can increase the risk of zoonotic diseases, which jump from animals to humans. Preparedness and mitigation are very important in facing the impacts of climate change. Governments in various countries are expected to formulate more flexible policies regarding spatial planning and green infrastructure development. Steps such as building embankments, carrying out reforestation and improving drainage systems can significantly reduce the impact of flooding. Public awareness also needs to be increased. Education about climate change and its impact on flooding is very important so that individuals can contribute to mitigation. Community programs that facilitate research, monitoring and capacity building will help communities to be more responsive to emergency situations. With all the potential impacts, it is important for various parties to work together in dealing with this problem. Collaboration between government, scientists and civil society is the key to creating sustainable and effective solutions in overcoming flood disasters which are increasingly becoming a global challenge.
